Confirm where you are connecting
Ask the venue for the intended network name instead of selecting a familiar-looking name at random. Keep your device and browser updated and pay attention to unexpected sign-in prompts. If a browser warns about a certificate, stop and investigate rather than clicking through.
A shared connection is also a shared physical environment. Position the screen so private information is not visible to people nearby and avoid discussing sensitive material where it can be overheard.
Protect the accounts behind the work
Use unique passwords or passphrases for important accounts and enable available multifactor authentication. The Government of Canada’s Get Cyber Safe guidance explains why reusing one password creates risk across several services. Follow your organisation’s access requirements when using work systems.
A password manager can help you maintain distinct credentials, but account recovery still needs attention. Keep recovery options current and know how to report a lost device. Avoid making a public workspace the first place you discover that recovery depends on a missing phone.
Choose a fallback before a meeting
For a time-sensitive task, know whether you can use an approved alternative connection or move to another location. Test that option before a critical call starts. Connection speed alone does not tell you how reliable the entire workflow will be.
When you finish, close shared-device sessions and take all equipment with you. On your own device, review automatic network reconnection settings as appropriate. A repeatable routine is easier to maintain than a different set of improvised precautions in every café.
Keep in mind
- Confirm the intended network
- Protect account recovery
- Prepare an approved fallback
- Check the desk before leaving
